"I love you as certain dark things are to be
loved, in secret, between the shadow and the soul." - Pablo Neruda

Papi (unfinished)

As I painted this portrait, I caught glimpses of me
my brows
My abuela, and her fair dark strands
My abuelo, and his grin
The greatest man in my life.

Drawing

I dreamt you once, you know,
the discipline of a sailor
the eyes of a dreamer.

Written Words

Soo many words, soo randomly in and through my mind and thoughts.
Driving me to clouds,
sometimes sun rays behind it,
sometimes rays of rage in it.
These real feelings ever rarely reality;
I needed to find a home for them
to refuge.

...And I feel
a little better already.

El Beso

Feather falls up.
Irresistible scent; tingle my skin, desire you to touch.
May this dance be forever still.

If I fall, may I fall up.
If I fell, may you be mine.

I'd drown in burgundy for You.

You make me feel something powerful like gold,
but like those gold chains I don't make a sound,
though my eyes always paint its color for you.

I'm falling.

Ode to a jolly good FELO

From left to right: Billy, my youngest brother; my grandfather; my father; my uncle, Felo's father; Felo himself; my brother Ramon; my cousin Loulou; Felo's uncle; and my cousin Rocky.

Inspiration? My cousin Felo's spirituality. Christmas image to a family member, a combination of The Last Super and the Godfather, simply a handful of Guzman men with character from my father's side.

Acrylic on paper.

Graduation... this is love.

Hi World, so both in terms of my personal and professional life here, I officially graduate in under 12hrs, from Maryland Institute Collage of Art (MICA)!

It is so hard to believe, but apparently I have put in enough work that this day has rapidly become a reality. So many have put in help and faith in me that without that, I probably would not be proclaiming before you today that I will have an BFA (bachelors of fine arts).

This is not only for me. It is so gratifying knowing that my father has so much joy and pride, and faith in me, and that every dollar he owns is my own dollar. This love, I have recognized after all these years, is the greatest thing in the world. I have immense love for my parents, for the rice & beans that Mommy makes that keeps my tummy & my heart fulfilled, and all the amazing teachers that work on nurturing out out greatest potential. To all those people I've crossed paths with, thank you. And although there is fear of these unknown possibilities for the nest year to come, for my life to come, I am fearless. Great possibilities have came true; I can say with great belief that anything is possible, and if it doesn't, it is not meant to be. But there is no reason for me not to succeed. This milestone is fact of what I am and my potential.

World, just know that I am here and I carry a love of hope with me.

Mucho amor, y siempre,
Jennifer Guzman.

Thesis

I Am currently more than ever, interested in the fashion illustration market. My travels to Europe has further fueled this. I am excited about this pursuit; that I think will suit me; It accommodates my love of the figure, particularly the female figure, which I have a confident grasp in understanding the anatomy, drawing, and composition. When focusing on clothing, it becomes an outer shell on the figure that vehicles as a narrative, through shapes, colors, and textures. It is also a device that can create strong compositions.

The true art of fashion illustration is not the same lately/ a slowly evaporating illustration field, for what it was. It has mostly gone digital, and a digitized paint drip is not the same as an accidental one, or even a purposeful one, which will still make it's mark in a way not exact. There is more of a thrill and control creating hands on; it's a different relationship as opposed to something completely digital.
Some fashion Illustrators that I admire greatly in their portfolio of work are:

Rene Gruau
"...had enormous influence on modern day fashion advertising and photography. Every time I see his illustrations I am completely overcome by the shockingly beautiful lines and spareness of composition. He was a genius!" -www.cyanatrendland.com

David Downton
"David Downton is the modern day Gruau." Valentino.
"...a hugely successful career working with, amongst others, Tiffany's New York, SAKS 5th Avenue, Harvey Nichols, Harrods, Selfridges, Visionaire, Vogue, Tatler, Elle, Harpers and Queen, British Fashion Council, Estée Lauder, Revlon, L'Oreal and Christian Dior." -www.theaio.com

Kenneth Paul Block
"He worked as an in-house illustrator for Fairchild Publications for more than 40 years, drawing numerous covers for W magazine and Women's Wear Daily. He also drew advertisements for Bergdorf Goodman, Bonwit Teller, and Lord & Taylor department stores in New York." -www.spock.com
